Brilliant Bookshops!

July 26, 2015 by aaabbott

As a British crime thriller writer, I love bookshops. They’re the beating heart of the book trade, sending tales and tomes to everyone who needs them. I still remember the excitement of buying a brand new novel for the first time, feeling the crisp pages and stiff cover with its shiny silver letters. But it’s not just about buying books. Here are four more reasons to love your local bookshop:

#1 Serendipity – in other words, the possibility of a pleasant surprise. It’s far easier to browse for new discoveries in real life than online.

#2 Parties. Foyles in Bristol hosted a launch party for me last week, for new crime thriller The Bride’s Trail. There were readers, writers, journalists, entrepreneurs – all happy to celebrate the birth of a new book. It was chatty and buzzy, and best of all, Foyles did all the work! My guests and I simply turned up and enjoyed ourselves.

#3 Live Fiction, Music & Poetry. One of my fave booksellers is The Big Comfy Bookshop in Coventry. They often host live events – story readings, poetry, even a regular folk club. Every town needs a place like this!

#4 Coffee, Tea and Cake. Both Foyles and Big Comfy Books sell delicious refreshments – all the better to invigorate you while you browse. In fact, Foyles give you free coffee if you buy a few books!

So, when you’re next meeting a friend for a cuppa, check out your local bookshop! What’s your fave? Tweet me at @AAAbbottstories to let me know!
