As well as writing British crime thrillers, I often do temporary work in big business. The life of a temporary worker is itself an inspiration to a writer. In fact, I didn’t hesitate to use it in my thriller Up In Smoke. Flitting through different organisations while scarcely leaving a trace, Susan sees herself as invisible, as if she were wearing a high-vis jacket.
I’m a big fan of businesses, both large and small. It isn’t because I could write about them (all the companies in my crime thrillers are fictional), but because I believe they pay for all the good things in our lives, through the wages and taxes they contribute to society. Ultimately, those taxes pay for libraries, schools, roads, hospitals – the list is almost endless. Of course, companies who don’t pay fair wages and taxes are pursued by the public and press nowadays, and rightly so.
